NJAGC Student Scholarship Program Overview

"The Barbara Swicord Scholarship"

Deadline: December 5, 2011

General Information:

  1. Scholarships are available to children of NJAGC members' children who are currently in grades K-12.
  2. Discretionary funds are for tuition assistance for programs and educational opportunities outside of regular school attendance for the purpose of enhancing, developing or supplementing skills, talents, and/or abilities of the applicant. Award amounts would range up to $250, but not exceed 75% of the total tuition amount.
  3. Funds are sent directly to the program, not the students, upon notification of official acceptance and registration into the program.
  4. Scholarships are awarded at the annual March conference of the organization.
  5. Scholarship awards are determined by the Scholarship Committee. Decisions are based on the information presented in the applications, which will be read blindly. All committee decisions are final. Students may receive only one scholarship within a 12-month program.
  6. Scholarship recipients' names may be published in NJAGC's Promise newsletter.
  7. Scholarship recipients are required to complete a questionnaire at the completion of the program.
  8. All available monies may not be awarded in one year. The committee can choose to carry over monies into the next application period.
Application Guidelines
  1. A copy of the program brochure must accompany the application form. Program information may take the form of a flyer, letter, or other descriptive material. Lessons, camps, workshops, educational trips, special programs, etc. could all be eligible to receive funding.
  2. Applications will be reviewed on the following criteria: Completeness of application, student interest in the program, appropriateness of the program for gifted and talented students, identification as a gifted and talented student, and support material, as well as availability of funds.
  3. Eligible students must submit evidence of characteristics of high ability in the areas related to the program for which funds are requested. Such identification may take the form of participation in a formal gifted program, test scores or scored evaluations of performance on a product, psychometric assessments, or two letters of recommendations from educators familiar with student's abilities. If letters of recommendation are used for eligibility requirements, each educator would complete the Part II form and attach it to their letters.
  4. Completed applications should be mailed to NJAGC at the organization's current address.
  5. Applicants who wish to be notified that application has been received should include a stamped self-addressed envelope with the application. (Download Application, click here)
