Gifted & Talented in New Jersey - NJAGC Advocacy and Legislative Update

Current issues:

Background: NJAGC has these continuing concerns about gifted education in New Jersey....

  • There is law, known as state administrative code for GT, but very little awareness about the special educational needs of gifted students, no state or federal funding, no consistent support from the DOE for gifted education to schools or families.
  • In NJ, we have what is known as "home rule." In our 600+ local districts [2400 schools serving 1.4 million students], services to gifted students vary from nothing to full time classes. Many districts are out of compliance with state regulations. The needs of over 80,000 gifted children in NJ warrant more attention. [maybe make the words “out of compliance” the link to the QSAC index page]
  • The recommendations of the Governor's Commission to Study Gifted Programs have been ignored.
